Our Staff

What We Do

What We Do

We treat wastewater (raw sewage). Anything that goes down the drains at your house travels via sanitary sewer system to the treatment plant for processing. We process the raw wastewater per standards set by the IEPA and USEPA and make the effluent acceptable to discharge to the Fox River. The dried by-product (sludge) is hauled to farms and used as fertilizer.

Those interested in knowing more about our treatment process are welcome to schedule a tour of our facilities by calling the District office at 847-526-3300. School and community organization tours are welcomed.

A Virtual Plant Tour is available here: NMWRD Virtual Plant Tour 2021

NMWRD about environment

Protecting Your Environment

The District is a regional wastewater treatment agency. We treat wastewater for 4 communities: Island Lake, Port Barrington, Lakemoor, and Holiday Hills. The District is a separate governmental agency with a board of 5 trustees that are appointed by the Illinois General Assembly. Board meetings are held at the District offices on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The District is not owned or operated by any of the villages for whom we treat wastewater.

The District’s treatment plant has been in operation since 1978 and has undergone one major expansion and two renovations to add additional treatment processes required by the IEPA. The current treatment plant is designed to treat an average of 2.0 million gallons per day with a design maximum capable of treating 5 million gallons of wastewater during peak flow. Our staff maintains and operates our 36-acre treatment facility, 23 pump stations and 77 miles of sanitary sewer mains.
